BUGG HOUSE
Durham, NC, 2006

This house is located on an 8 acre heavily wooded site facing a stream to the North. The house is organized as a series of four pavilions responding to the functions of the house. The placement of each pavilion is a function of both natural light and view. Connections are made via glass corridors and exterior walkways. The core elements of the house are contained within cast in place concrete volumes. These include kitchen, bathroom, garage and storage spaces. The design of the house provides a grouping of connected pavilions around a central forecourt. This forecourt is regular and has an underling geometric and proportional order. Along the EW axis is a linear core element sited at the line where the site topography changes from relatively flat to sloping down to the stream. Although the primary living spaces face north light is brought in from a clerestory that wraps the major living spaces.
