| AIA HEADQUARTERS COMPETITION |
Raleigh, NC, 2008
|
This project was a 2008 submission for a state wide architectural design competition sponsored by the NC chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Juried by a panel of 6 nationally recognized architects, the project received third place of over sixty proposals.
Located on a sloping, triangular site at the north end of Government Mall, the building is designed to house the headquarters and offices of the NC chapter of the AIA. The 12,000 sq. ft. facility is to contain a large multipurpose meeting room, conference space, archives, library, exhibit space, and a small cafe. The building is designed around the idea of the creation of an urban garden and the preservation of the unique character of the existing site, which is marked by sloping topography and a stand of ornamental trees to the west. The building is elevated above the street level to provide space for the required 30 car parking lot, while preserving much of the existing site for public use.
