| WELLONS HOUSE |
Raleigh, NC, in progress
|
Located in the eastern part of North Carolina the site for the Wellon’s house is a small island of green and trees surrounded on all sides by wheat fields. This surrounding ocean of wheat is ever changing. During the colder months the cover crop protects the soil. Sowing the Wheat is the planting phase and occurs in early spring. The final phase, the Harvest, is a 6 week process that takes place when the wheat is at its full maturity and color. The cycle is annual and provides an ever changing character to the site.
The house is conceived as a cubic volume and makes reference to simple massed farm structures prevalent at the edges of fields throughout North Carolina. By shifting the lower section the created void becomes a glass-enclosed living room. The living room is 2.5 ft. below grade in order to accentuate the view of the surrounding fields. The shifted lower section is covered with chrome panels and reflects the surroundings. Additionally, it contains the support spaces and tractors. In the upper section, a large volume clad in metal siding, wood clad bedrooms hover above the living space.
