| ALDRIDGE HOUSE |
Raleigh, NC, in progress
|
This renovation and addition project was designed to make a small one level 1950’s brick house livable for three people, with the inclusion of Betty’s mother into the Aldridge household. The complete renovation of the existing house includes a new kitchen, updated bathrooms, enlarged bedrooms, and more functional living spaces. Because the house is on a small piece of property with tight setbacks, it was not possible to add a new bedroom on the first floor. By creating a new second level for the bedroom, bath, work area, and storage, it was possible to enlarge the first floor spaces.
On the back of the house, this bedroom and stair take the form of a metal, glass, and wood two-level dormer that extends out and down to the floor below. The large glass window opens to the back with a view of the back yard, a lap pool, and a significant tree buffer to the south. The form of the addition minimizes its mass and provides dynamic spaces for the bedrooms. At about 500 square feet, this addition represents 35% of the new building footprint. To minimize the impact on the street front, the addition repeats the slope of the existing room and becomes virtually invisible from the street.
