HONG KONG DESIGN INSTITUTE
Hong Kong, China, 2006

The Hong Kong Design Institute project is a submission for an international competition. The program contains several interdisciplinary design + production departments, as well as on-site parking and bus/taxi drop-off. The site is located in Tseung Kwan O, a suburb of Hong Kong. This suburban context is one marked by large towers which typically rest on plinths, creating a disconnected and artificial landscape 2-3 stories about the street. The five story building is organized about a central garden which unifies the otherwise disparate program elements and is reminiscent of a traditional, introverted Chinese scholar garden. The garden diagram, in both section and in plan, is one that acknowledges the separation from the city, while also folding to create a series of broad garden terraces and ramps that reconnect this typically isolated realm to the street.
